Linnet Mateta-Khoza’s death has left Mopani softball shell-shocked
A DARK cloud has befall the softball fraternity in Mopani region following the devastating death of Linnet Mateta- Khosa.
Born at Ga-Mokgwathi village in the Bolobedu area, she was one of pioneers of Ice Cold Pitchers women’s team.
When the news of her passing were confirmed by Limpopo Softball Association Head of Technical, Sipho Mthobuka, it triggered tremors among those familiar with her unwavering love for the game.
Mateta-Khoza’s untimely demise comes at a critical juncture when softball in the entire province is teetering on the brink of collapse following the sudden disappearance of local clubs.
Mopani region, has for decades been struggling to resuscitate fallen clubs and establish new ones.
Mateta-Khoza was one of the few women who provided hope for the game’s revival.
Mthobuka, who is Mopani’s international softball ambassador who represents South Africa at global tournaments, says Mateta-Khoza’s death has robbed the region of a promising star.
“The of this young woman has opened a painful wound for
Mopani regional softball. Her commitment to the game was unmatched and her passing will leave a huge vacuum. It is a devastating blow for both the region and the province,” says Mthobuka.
The provincial softball governing body has called upon all its affiliates to mourn the death of a fallen heroine.
LSA Head of Marketing and Publicity, Moyahabo Mabeba says they are still shell-shocked by Mateta-Khoza’s passing.
“”The softball community of Limpopo is in collective mourning. We send our condolences to Mopani district softball governing structures and the bereaved family. There is nothing as devastating as the death of a young soul. We also call upon all softball lovers to wear their team regalia on the day of the send off as it is customary in the game. Man home, man safe!”, says Mabeba
