The long-anticipated reshuffle of the Limpopo Provincial Executive Council is finally underway today, ending months of political speculation and power play across the province.
Tangible signs of the major executive shake-up emerged early on Wednesday morning following an official SABC News report, which was quickly backed by the abrupt resignation of Mopani District Municipality Executive Mayor, Pule Shayi.
Shayi submitted his immediate resignation letter to the Speaker of the Mopani District Municipality, expressing gratitude to the council and communities for the opportunity to serve, while clearing the way for his expected elevation to the provincial cabinet.
Political analysts and insiders agree that this reshuffle became unavoidable following the recent African National Congress (ANC) Limpopo Provincial Conference. The elective conference significantly reshuffled the internal political power balance, boosting the political fortunes of key figures while diminishing the standings of several long-serving leaders.
Among those whose standing rose dramatically at the conference was Polokwane Executive Mayor John Mpe, who successfully secured the position of ANC Deputy Provincial Chairperson. Joining him in the rising ranks were Mopani District Executive Mayor Pule Shayi and the Mayor of Fetakgomo-Tubatse Local Municipality, Eddie Maila.
Conversely, former Deputy Provincial Secretary Basikopo Makamu saw a noticeable drop in status, falling to an additional member role while being assigned as deputy head of elections. Similarly, Florence Radzilani experienced a decline in her political clout after dropping from her previous post as provincial deputy chairperson to an additional member of the provincial executive committee.
Historically in Limpopo politics, significant shifts in the ANC provincial structure serve as a direct foreboding of changes within the government executive. While the cabinet reshuffle has been repeatedly rumoured and delayed over recent months, the momentum has reached its climax as Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba prepares to make her formal announcement later today.
In preparation for the impending provincial changes, both Pule Shayi and Eddie Maila were recently added to the ANC reserve list for the Limpopo Provincial Legislature, setting the foundation for their transition from local government to provincial administration.
Notably missing from the legislature short list was newly elected ANC Deputy Chairperson John Mpe. Despite his prominent political elevation, Mpe chose to remain in local government as the Executive Mayor of Polokwane Municipality and actively participated in the selection interviews to maintain his municipal role.
Meanwhile, the prolonged delay in finalizing the executive reshuffle has created intense political friction at the local government level. In the Mopani District, the power vacuum and uncertainty sparked acrimonious political contestation. Dagma Mamanyoha, widely considered the logical and direct choice to succeed Shayi as Mopani District Municipality Executive Mayor, has faced aggressive challenges from rival factions within the region.
As the political dust settles across local councils, all attention now turns to Premier Ramathuba’s office in Polokwane, where the official announcement of the new cabinet line up will seal the new political era for Limpopo.
