SAFA Mopani referees will be put through their paces when they gather at Nkowankowa Stadium on 11 October for their annual fitness assessment.

The fitness test, scheduled to start at 07h00, is aimed at ensuring referees are physically prepared to officiate matches at the required level.

Among the tests will be the 40-metre sprint, with referees required to complete the distance within the prescribed time. Officials will also undergo the 10-metre CODA test, which assesses acceleration, sprinting and sideways movement, particularly for assistant referees.

The assessment will include different categories, with officials required to meet the standards applicable to their respective category. In Category Two or Three, referees will complete six 40-metre sprints, with a target time of approximately 6.5 seconds per sprint.

The referees will also undergo an endurance test consisting of 10 laps. Each lap involves a 75-metre run followed by a 25-metre walk, conducted across four stations.

The tests are designed not only to assess physical fitness but also to reinforce the importance of discipline, preparation and integrity among match officials.

The message to referees is clear: be prepared and be fit.

Physical fitness is regarded as an important part of modern refereeing, allowing officials to keep up with play, maintain the correct position and make better decisions during matches.

“Fit referees make a better game” remains the underlying message as SAFA Mopani prepares its officials for the new season.

All referees are welcome to attend the fitness assessment at Nkowankowa Stadium on Saturday, 11 October, at 07h00.
