MEC of COGHSTA, Basikopo Makamu
The Limpopo MEC of COGHSTA, Basikopo Makamu, has expressed confidence in the plans and multi-disciplinary teams in Vhembe and Mopani districts, as the provinces braces itself for the heavy rains this weekend because of Cyclone Freddy.
According to the South African Weather Service, it is anticipated that the tropical cyclone will bring heavy rains over the two districts from Saturday to Monday.
On this score MEC Makamu, whose department is responsible for disaster management in the province, discouraged community members from travelling if not entirely necessary, and adviced them to avoid running water such as rivers and streams over roads and bridges.
“Our Provincial Disaster Management Centre is in contact with multi-disciplinary teams, made up of our District Disaster Management Centres, Fire and Rescue, Emergency Services, Department of Health, Department of Social Development, Eskom, Ward Councillors and others,” Makamu said in a statement.
Makamu has also encouraged Traditional Leaders in the two districts to play a role in the multi-disciplinary teams and assist to ensure the safety of the residents.
“Our teams are ready for any eventuality, and we have evacuation plans in place in case of flooding. We encourage those located in waterlogged areas to be ready in case the need to be evacuated, “Makamu warned.
