MEC of Limpopo Provincial Treasury Seaparo Sekoati on Tuesday tabled the budget for 2023/24 before the Provincial Legislature.
An amount of R21. 471 billion is allocated for the delivery of infrastructure within the province. In the financial year ahead, an amount of R7. 312 billion across departments for infrastructure. The Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure takes a whopping R3. 398 billion. Education scores R1. 486 billion and COGHSTA R1. 229 billion.
The Department of Social Development takes the least of the budget at R10. 6 million, followed by Economic Development, Environment and Tourism at R20. 0 million.
Other expenditure areas new infrastructure (R416. 3 million), and rehabilitation and refurbishment (R379. 3 million).
As part of the infrastructure delivery framework, Treasury will support the provincial government’s work in the just energy transition as pronounced by Premier Stanley Mathabatha in his State of the Province Address.
On the allocations per Department, Education receives the highest share of 42. 2 per cent of the provincial budget with an allocation of R38. 188 billion.
The Department of Health receives the second highest allocation of the provincial budget at 30. 0 per cent, R23. 772 billion. Included in the allocation is for the placement of medical graduates, employment of doctors, purchase of ambulances and for Cuban Doctor Programme.
Public Works receives a budget allocation of R4. 950 billion.
The Department of COGHSTA is allocated a budget of R2. 592 billion. Included in the allocation is for the construction and maintenance of Traditional Council offices, the furnishing of Traditional Council offices and the purchase of vehicles for Senior Traditional Leaders.
Sport, Arts and Culture receives an allocation of R621. 816, of which R10 million is for the much anticipated Provincial Theatre. In his pronouncement during his State of the Province Address, Premier Mathabatha said that the theatre project is at an advanced stage, after Polokwane municipality made a portion of land available for the theatre.
Economic Development, Environment and Tourism is allocated a budget of R1. 450 billion. R215. 0 million goes to Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone and Fetakgomo-Tubatse Industrial Park. Limpopo Tourism Agency receives R22. 700 for Tourism Marketing.
Social Development receives R1. 946 billion, Transport and Community Safety is allocated R2. 484 and Agriculture is allocated R1. 771 billion.
