A Ford Ranger loaded with illicit cigarettes stopped by police traveling from Kgapane to Tzaneen.
Four men arrested in Modjadjiskloof for possession of illicit cigarettes and bribery appeared Modjadjiskloof Magistrate’s Court, on Thursday, 18 January 2024.
Kudzai Mungate(40), Eshley Matsorera(45), Oscar Mbazo(25) and Tatenda Samasuku(30), were reminded in custody until 23 January 2024, for bail application.
The four suspects were arrested at Politsi R36, on Wednesday, 17 January 2024 at about 10:30. Their arrest came after, police were tipped-off about white Ford Ranger traveling from Kgapane to Tzaneen.
“Operation was quickly activated along R36 Politsi road. The described vehicle was spotted and tactically approached. Upon searching it, Police found 2087 cartons of illicit cigarettes worth R313 050. Suspects were then arrested. While at the scene, a Toyota Hilux, with the driver and passenger, stopped. They then offered the Police R5000 bribe to release the two suspects found in possession of illicit cigarettes. They were also arrested for bribery,” said police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers has applauded the police for arresting the suspects and confiscating the illicit cigarettes. The police investigations are still ongoing.
