Newcomers Selwane White Vultures have ascended to the top of the ABC Motsepe League standings after securing a vital point in a 0-0 away draw against Munaca.

This result, along with Vondwe XI Bullets’ 2-1 loss to Mpheni Defenders last Sunday at Thohoyandou Stadium, allowed the Vultures to claim first place with 30 points from 17 matches.

Despite their current lead, the Vultures’ title hopes remain uncertain. Second-placed Vondwe, just one point behind, has played only 14 games and has three matches in hand. Vondwe has performed well this season under previous coach Owen Da Gama and current coach Musa Nkondo.

Their advantage of more home games could play a crucial role, as Vondwe has yet to lose at home in front of their devoted supporters this season.

Another strong contender is the defending champions, Mpheni Defenders, who sit on 26 points and also have three games in hand. If they win all their remaining matches, they could reach a total of 35 points.

Meanwhile, Munaca and Musina, with 28 and 26 points respectively, remain potential dark horses in the race. Musina, in particular, has a game in hand that could improve their standing.

Regardless of whether the Vultures ultimately clinch the title, their impact in their debut season has been remarkable. Their coach, Lufuno “Zambrotta” Ndou, has yet to lose a match since taking over from Musa Nkondo.

He attributes the team’s success to a collective effort: “It’s not a one-man show; we work as a team, including the management.” Confident in their title push, Ndou added, “It’s possible; we can win it. Games in hand mean nothing if you don’t win those games. Vondwe has to play Mpheni twice, and we are facing them next week. Anything is possible.”
