All eyes will be on KwaNyamazane Stadium this Sunday at 15:00 when Limpopo-based Baroka FC begins their National First Division (NFD) campaign against newcomers The Bees FC.
“Bakgaga ba ga Mphahlele” are entering the new season with renewed ambition and confidence. After a challenging journey in recent years, Baroka has firmly set its sights on returning to the top of South African football, with the ultimate goal of winning the NFD title.
This match is also significant for coach Dan “Dance” Malesela, who is leading Baroka into a new season for the first time after joining the club mid-season in the past. Known for his flair-driven, ball-playing philosophy, Malesela will be eager to help his team secure a winning start.
Baroka’s motivation is further strengthened by their new partnership with financial services giant Mafori Group, which has become the club’s main sponsor. A positive result in their opening match will not only set the tone for the season but also serve as a strong statement to their new backers.
On the other hand, The Bees are one of three teams promoted to the NFD this season. The Mpumalanga-based side will be playing its first-ever match at this level and, with home support behind them, they are determined to announce their arrival with an upset.
However, Baroka will need to adjust to life without their experienced assistant coach, Amukelani “JJ” Hlongwani, who left to join Casric Stars during the off-season. His absence means more responsibility for Malesela and his technical team as they prepare for a successful campaign.
Preseason has provided a glimpse of Baroka’s form, including a 2-1 victory over Kruger United and a narrow 1-0 defeat to Venda FC in the Mafori Group tournament in Lebowakgomo. These results showed promise but also highlighted areas for improvement before the league begins.
With the stakes high, a victory on Sunday could serve as an excellent springboard for Baroka’s title push, while The Bees will aim to prove they belong in the country’s second tier.
KwaNyamazane Stadium is set for a fascinating encounter—one that could shape early-season momentum for both sides.
