Former Marumo Gallants coach and Nedbank Cup winner Mpho Maleka is set to take a major step forward in his coaching journey as he enrols for the prestigious CAF A Diploma Coaching Course, joining an elite group that includes Bafana Bafana assistant coach Helman “Midnight Express” Mkhelele and former national team defender David Nyathi.
The course, hosted by the Lesotho Football Association (LeFA), will commence on November 18 and run until November 25 at the Bambatha Ts’ita Sports Arena in Lesotho. This marks the first block of an advanced program aimed at empowering Africa’s top coaches with cutting-edge tactical, technical, and leadership skills essential for success at the highest levels of the game.
For Maleka, this opportunity is yet another milestone in a career defined by consistent growth and a commitment to lifelong learning. Having previously obtained his CAF B License in Zambia, he continues to build on his impressive coaching résumé and deepen his understanding of modern football.
Although currently unattached, Maleka’s credentials make him one of the most accomplished and versatile coaches in South Africa. He is among the few who have coached across all divisions of the local football structure—from the Hollywoodbets Super League and ABC Motsepe League, to the National First Division (NFD) and the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
His broad experience, coupled with his deep football insight, has earned him widespread respect among peers and players alike. Many in the football fraternity regard him as a forward-thinking tactician whose continued education will benefit not only his personal career but also the future of South African football—especially within national team development structures.
A respected football figure both on and off the field, Maleka enjoyed a successful playing career before transitioning into coaching, representing clubs such as Moroka Swallows, Mpumalanga Black Aces, and Free State Stars, among others.
“Learning never stops,” said Maleka. “Football keeps evolving, and as coaches, we must evolve with it if we are to bring out the best in our players and in ourselves.”
As the CAF A Diploma Coaching Course begins in Lesotho, the presence of seasoned figures like Mkhelele, Nyathi, and Maleka reflects a shared commitment to excellence and a bright future for African coaching.
