The Holywoodbets League Baobab Stream kicked off in explosive fashion this past weekend, with Matsena Giant Killers FC announcing their return to top form after a decade of silence.
The former National First Division side stunned the region with a resounding 8–2 victory over Mamaila Golden Eagles on Saturday at Matsena Sports Ground, placing them at the top of the log with three points.
For many supporters, the result was more than a win—it was a statement. Once a powerhouse in Limpopo football, Matsena seems determined to restore their dominance in the local game.
Their eight-goal performance has sent a clear message to the rest of the league that the legendary club is back and ready to reclaim its crown.
While Matsena rose to the occasion, Josy United delivered the shock of the weekend. Known for their big opening wins and high-scoring starts to the season, Josy United were held to a 0–0 draw at home by a stubborn AC Millan. The club, which once swept early fixtures with ease, now appears to be struggling to replicate its former glory.
This dip in form could be linked to their newly rebuilt squad, made up mainly of young, inexperienced players. Only four players from last season remain, and the transition seems to be affecting their rhythm.
In other action, Mphehli Real Rovers of Kgapane township have positioned themselves in third place after a solid 3–0 victory in their opening match, also against AC Millan. Last season, the youthful but dangerous side finished in fourth place, and this year they have made their ambitions clear—they’re going for the championship. Led by the talented Tshepo Sebopetsa of TES Development, the team believes they can finish the year on top of the standings.
Free Boys, new to the league, made an impressive entrance and currently sit in second place after defeating Mamaila Shinners FC.
Meanwhile, Rellen FC, coached by Isaac Senyolo, collected three points without breaking a sweat, earning a walkover victory against Moshakga.
Other Weekend Results:
Black Antelope 0–3 Rabadia.
Free Boys 3–0 Mamaila Shinners FC
Ramaroka Super Aces 2–0 Mamaila Citizens
With just one round played, the Baobab Stream is already buzzing with surprises, statements, and renewed ambitions. If the opening weekend is anything to go by, this season promises to be one of the most exciting in recent memory.
