Mukondeni Young Chiefs head coach Joel Mongalo has boldly declared his intention to win the ABC Motsepe League Stream A title this season and secure a place in the prestigious national playoffs.
And judging by their early-season form, his confidence may not be misplaced.
Mongalo, a seasoned mentor with a proven track record, currently has Young Chiefs sitting third on the log with 10 points from four matches—just two points behind joint leaders Mpheni Defenders and Tzaneen United, who are tied on 12 points each. Mukondeni have registered three wins and one draw, remaining unbeaten in the campaign so far.
The experienced tactician is no stranger to success in the ABC Motsepe League. In the 2015/16 season, he famously guided Magezi FC to promotion from the ABC Motsepe League to the National First Division. Last season, he pulled off another remarkable feat by saving Winnerspark from relegation, turning their fortunes around when many had written them off.
Mongalo’s confidence is rooted not only in his coaching achievements but also in his distinguished playing career. He previously guarded the posts for top-flight sides including Mahwelereng Real Rovers, Orlando Pirates, and Bloemfontein Celtic, among others.
Having also won Stream B with The Dolphins, only to be stopped by Mpheni Defenders in the provincial playoffs, Mongalo believes his experience has prepared him for the challenge ahead.
“I have played football at the highest level and I have also promoted the likes of Magezi and Winnerspark. I know this league—there is no way I cannot win it,” said Mongalo.
With his team showing discipline, balance, and hunger on the field, Young Chiefs fans have every reason to dream. And if early performances are anything to go by, the race for the Stream A title may well have a new favourite.
