Newly signed striker William Bopape produced a lively and impressive debut for Tzaneen United, as the title-chasing side claimed a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Phalaborwa United in a pulsating ABC Motsepe League Stream A encounter on Saturday.

Although he was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, the 24-year-old forward’s energy, movement and attacking threat played a key role in unsettling the home defence, helping Lebapola secure maximum points in one of the toughest away fixtures in the league.

Tzaneen United, who are second on the log, six points behind leaders Mpheni Defenders with the same number of games played, struck twice in the first half to take control of the contest.

The opening goal came courtesy of centre-back Lavis Soko, who fired a thunderous long-range effort from outside the box, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to the spot. Soon after, Sandile Mahlangu doubled the advantage with a composed finish after beating his marker, capitalising on an untimely charge from the goalkeeper.

Phalaborwa United pulled one back in the second half from the penalty spot, setting up a tense finish, but Tzaneen United showed composure and defensive discipline to see out the match and collect all three points.

Bopape, who recently joined Tzaneen from Makotopong Bahumi — currently fourth in Stream B — slotted seamlessly into a star-studded Lebapola outfit, bringing pace, intelligent movement and experience. His football journey includes a vital role in Nkowankowa Continental’s promotion to the ABC Motsepe League, as well as valuable exposure with Polokwane City’s DDC side.

With the championship race heating up, Bopape looks set to play a crucial role in Tzaneen United’s push for glory, and his debut performance suggests that goals will soon follow.
