What was expected to be a routine ABC Motsepe League encounter turned into a dramatic and controversial afternoon as Selwane White Vultures sensationally walked off the pitch in protest of a penalty decision during their match against bottom-of-the-log Nkowankowa Continental at Nkowankowa Stadium last Saturday.
The shocking incident unfolded in the second half with more than 20 minutes still remaining, leaving stunned supporters, officials and players in disbelief. Vultures’ supporters voiced their disappointment and strongly urged the team to continue, even staging brief protests in the stands, but the bench stood firm and instructed the players to abandon the match.
The match itself had been evenly contested up to that point. Continental took the lead in the first half, capitalising on home advantage, but their joy was short-lived as the visitors struck back minutes later to level matters, sending the teams into the break locked at 1-1.
Tensions rose early in the second half when the referee awarded a penalty to the hosts — a decision that sparked outrage from the Vultures camp. After heated protests, the visitors eventually made the dramatic decision to leave the pitch, effectively bringing the game to a premature and chaotic end.
One Vultures official defended the decision, claiming blatant bias from the match official.
“We decided not to continue because we genuinely believe the referee was biased,” said the official. “We even have a voice note of him saying that we will not win a game officiated by him. Clearly, that was not a penalty.”
The club further claimed that the match will be replayed, insisting that justice would prevail once the matter is reviewed by the authorities.
However, history suggests that the consequences could be severe. The South African Football Association (SAFA) has traditionally taken a firm stance against teams that abandon matches, often handing down automatic forfeits, three-point deductions, and hefty fines.
Several clubs in similar situations have previously paid a heavy price, raising serious doubts over whether Vultures will escape punishment this time around.
Whether SAFA will rule differently in this case remains to be seen, but one thing is certain — the dramatic walk-off has sparked heated debate and added yet another controversial chapter to this season’s fiercely contested ABC Motsepe League campaign.
