Tzaneen United’s quest to close the gap at the summit of the ABC Motsepe League standings suffered a major setback after they went down 2-1 to The Dolphins FC in a gripping encounter at Westfalia Sports Ground on Tuesday afternoon.
The Maruleng-based side, who came into the clash sitting second on the log, knew that only a victory would keep their title ambitions firmly alive, with leaders Mpheni Defenders holding a six-point advantage. Backed by strong home support, United started on the front foot, dominating possession and carving out a series of promising chances.
Midfield general Sandile “Nyaope” Mahlangu put in a sterling performance, dictating the tempo and driving his side forward with energy and purpose. Newly signed striker William “Wicho” Bopape was also on top form, unleashing a series of dangerous shots at goal that kept the Dolphins defence on constant alert.
At the back, defender Lavis Soko provided much-needed stability, winning almost all aerial duels and organising the defensive line, which allowed United’s attackers to surge forward with confidence and freedom.
Their dominance was eventually rewarded through Makwea Clement Moyahabo, affectionately known as “Mbokazi,” who unleashed a thunderous strike from distance that left the Dolphins goalkeeper rooted to the spot, sending the home crowd into celebration.
However, just as United looked set to head into the break in control, a costly error shifted the momentum.
Goalkeeper Given “Vhavenda” Mashimbje gifted Dolphins a lifeline in the dying minutes of the half after parrying a ball that was drifting wide straight into the path of an alert striker, who made no mistake from close range to level matters at 1-1.
The second half saw a tactical shift from Dolphins coach Katlego Mashego, who introduced a disciplined low-block defensive system, relying on swift counter-attacks. The strategy tested a star-studded Tzaneen United side, popularly known as Lebapola, who continued to push forward in search of a breakthrough.
Despite creating numerous chances, most were half opportunities, with the Dolphins defence standing firm under relentless pressure. Just as the home side appeared poised to regain the lead, the visitors struck decisively on the counter.
A lapse in defensive positioning on the left flank allowed a Dolphins attacker to cut his way into the box before delivering a precise diagonal pass to a waiting striker. Showing composure and skill, the forward held the ball well, beat two defenders and calmly slotted past Mashimbje to put Dolphins ahead 2-1.
With the advantage secured, the visitors dropped even deeper, committing more bodies to defence in a determined effort to protect their lead. Tzaneen responded with urgency, pumping long balls into the danger area, but their attacks were repeatedly repelled.
Matters worsened for the hosts when Bopape — who looked the most likely to score — was substituted, leaving United short of aerial presence and cutting edge as they struggled to win crucial duels and break down the stubborn defensive block.
Despite late pressure, the equaliser never came, and Dolphins held firm to claim a vital away victory that delivered a heavy blow to Tzaneen United’s title aspirations.
