Baroka FC have been relegated from the National First Division after going down 3-0 to log leaders Kruger United in a match that confirmed their painful drop.
The Lebowakgomo-based side went into the clash knowing only victory would keep their survival hopes alive, but Kruger United showed their class and finished the job in convincing fashion.
Now all eyes shift to another Limpopo outfit, Black Leopards, who could suffer the same fate this weekend if they also fall to Kruger United.
If that happens, it will be Kruger United who officially confirm relegation for both Limpopo sides while also moving a step away from history — as they need just a draw to seal promotion to the Premier Soccer League.
Inside football circles, many believe Baroka’s downfall came from too much instability on the bench, with constant coaching changes disrupting rhythm and consistency throughout the season.
However, club owner Khurishi Mphahlele has reportedly pointed fingers at poor pre-season preparation, saying the foundation was not strong enough from the start when Dan Malesela was in charge.
Some pundits have also raised the issue of assistant coach Amukelani “JayJay” Hlongwani, who was brought in from Mpheni Defenders a few seasons ago. They argue that Hlongwani understood the Baroka identity and winning formula, and his departure weakened the technical structure. He is now with Casric Stars, who still have a chance of pushing for promotion playoff football.
For Black Leopards, the pressure is now massive. Anything less than a win this weekend could see them join Baroka in the drop zone, completing a tough week for football in Limpopo.
