Football supporters across Limpopo are eagerly awaiting the blockbuster ABC Motsepe League playoff encounter between Mpheni Defenders and Ngwaabe City Motors set to take place at Seshego Stadium on Saturday, 16 May 2026.

The much-anticipated clash is expected to produce fireworks as both teams head into the provincial playoffs in excellent form after impressive league campaigns in their respective streams.

Mpheni Defenders completely dominated Stream A throughout the season, suffering only two defeats and displaying consistency, discipline, and attacking quality from start to finish. Their dominance has made them strong favourites among football supporters and pundits heading into the decisive playoff fixtures.

On the other hand, Ngwaabe City Motors showed resilience and character to emerge victorious in a fiercely contested Stream B race. Unlike Mpheni’s relatively comfortable campaign, Ngwaabe had to fight until the final stages of the season in one of the most competitive streams in the province.

Many soccer analysts believe Mpheni Defenders hold the advantage due to their experience in high-pressure playoff matches. The club has won the provincial playoffs several times in the past, although they have repeatedly fallen short during the national playoffs where promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship is decided.

Soccer pundits have once again tipped Mpheni to win the provincial playoffs this season, with many believing the club possesses the experience and squad depth needed to finally break through.

The stakes are even higher this year following the relegation of Baroka F.C. and Black Leopards F.C. from the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Their return to the ABC Motsepe League next season is expected to make competition for promotion even tougher.

As a result, many supporters believe this could be Mpheni Defenders’ best and possibly last realistic opportunity to secure promotion before the league becomes even more competitive.

There is also growing hope among Limpopo football supporters that Mpheni can help restore the province’s status in professional football by closing the gap left by Baroka and Black Leopards.

Fans believe promotion for Mpheni would help ensure Limpopo continues to have strong representation in South African professional football next season.
