As preparations intensify for Registration Weekend 2 ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, the Electoral Commission (IEC) has opened provisional municipal segments of the voters’ roll for public inspection.
Copies of the voters’ roll are now available during official office hours at municipal and provincial offices of the Electoral Commission across South Africa.
This inspection period provides political parties, independent candidates, and ordinary citizens with a critical opportunity to verify voter information and ensure the accuracy of the voters’ roll before South Africans go to the polls.
Political parties and candidates interested in contesting the 2026 Local Government Elections are encouraged to visit their nearest IEC municipal or provincial office between 08:30 and 16:30 on weekdays to review the provisional voters’ rolls.
For political parties represented at the Provincial Party Liaison Committee (PLC) level, copies of the voters’ rolls are available at provincial IEC offices during these stipulated hours until Friday, 31 July 2026.
The IEC confirmed that physical or electronic copies of the municipal voters’ roll segments can also be made available to interested parties upon request, provided prior arrangements are made directly with electoral officials.
Checking the voters’ roll is an essential part of maintaining free, fair, and credible elections. It allows stakeholders to confirm that registered voters are placed in the correct municipal wards and voting districts based on their ordinary residential addresses.
Any person who identifies incorrect details or suspects fraud on the voters’ roll has the legal right to submit a formal objection. Objections to the voters’ roll must be lodged in the prescribed manner in terms of Section 15 of the Electoral Act 73 of 1998.
The Commission will review all submitted objections through established legal procedures to guarantee that only eligible voters remain registered in their respective voting districts.
Electoral authorities have also reassured South Africans that voter registration will not close immediately after the upcoming registration weekend.
Following the conclusion of the final national Registration Weekend, the voters’ roll will remain open to the public. Potential voters who miss the registration weekend will still be able to register to vote or update their residential address details online or at local IEC offices.
This open registration period will continue until the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, officially proclaims the voting date in the Government Gazette.
The publication of the official proclamation by Minister Schreiber in the Government Gazette will formally close the voters’ roll and trigger the official election timetable. Once the roll is closed, no further new registrations or address updates will be accepted for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
Members of the public and political representatives are urged to take full advantage of the inspection window to confirm their details and help safeguard the integrity of local democracy.
