There will be plenty of action at the 2026 edition of the Women’s Day Tournament.
After a protracted layoff from competitive softball, women are eager to dust off the cobwebs.
The 2026 Women’s Day Tournament is billed for August 09 at Mahwelereng stadium, pitting score of overzealous women against each other to test their strength in this one-day sporting blockbuster.
The evet takes place in the jewel of the bushveld where the Waterberg Softball Association (WSA) has embarked on a revival campaign to salvage the sport from the abyss of despair.
Tournament organisers have announced that plans are afoot to mobilise scores of women from across the length and breadth of the ballgame fraternity to converge at this tournament.
The Women’s Day Tournament is one of the major headlines on Limpopo Softball Association’s calendar of events.
WSA chairman, Thabo Molaudzi says the tournament aims to revive the game in the region and provide women with an opportunity to showcase their talent during this month that celebrates women across the globe.
“The tournament forms part of our commitment to investing in ladies softball, promoting gender equality in sport, empowering women and creating opportunities for female athletes to participate and excel in competitive softball,” says Molaudzi.
LSA publicist, Moyahabo Mabeba says the event will also shine the spotlight on women’s game ahead of the Region 5 tournament in Gaborone, Botswana.
“The Women’s Day Tournament in Mahwelereng will comes at an opportune moment when the country is preparing for the trip to Botswana. Majority of our women have not had enough game time recently but this upcoming tournament will help them a great deal in terms of mental and physical strengthening,” says Mabeba.
The tournament is expected to feature the home side, Spikes, Academy 1, Mapela Hub, Naledi Spiders, Moletlane Texas, University of Limpopo, Moletjie, Cheetah, Volcanos, Palmridge, Ma-young and the Tshwane University of Technology.
Molaudzi confirmed that there will be a prize money R10 000 for the winners and R5 000 for runners up.
He added that there will be gold and silver medals for champions and runners up, respectively while there will be individual trophies for outstanding performances.
