Maruleng Local Municipality is looking forward to welcoming runners, families, supporters and visitors as excitement builds ahead of the annual Hoedspruit Wildlife Haven Half Marathon, taking place next weekend.
The much-loved marathon has become one of the municipality’s growing sporting and community highlights, bringing together athletes, fitness enthusiasts, local businesses and residents in a celebration of health, tourism and community pride.
Organised by Maruleng Athletic Club in partnership with Maruleng Local Municipality, the event will take place on 30 May 2026 at the Drakensig Military Sports Ground.
Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountains, runners will experience one of the most scenic routes in the area. The event is expected to attract top runners, local athletes and community members from Maruleng and surrounding areas.
The Mayor of Maruleng Local Municipality, Cllr Tsheko Musolwa, said the municipality is especially proud of the growing number of local runners who continue to participate in the marathon.
Mayor Musolwa said the event is more than just a race, as it also creates opportunities for the local economy and helps position Maruleng as a destination of choice for sport, leisure and tourism.
“This marathon not only contributes to the growth of our local economy, but also gives our local runners a platform to showcase their talent. When visitors come into our area, they spend money on accommodation, food, transport and other services. This supports local businesses, SMMEs, informal traders and creates opportunities for our people,” said Mayor Musolwa.
He added that events of this nature help bring people together, promote local culture and strengthen Maruleng’s reputation as a municipality capable of hosting major sporting, cultural and entertainment events.
Mayor Musolwa also used the opportunity to encourage residents to take their health and wellbeing seriously, saying running is one of the simplest ways to stay active.
“Running keeps the body and mind active. It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay healthy. As leaders, we must lead by example and show our communities that wellness begins with small, consistent steps,” said Mayor Musolwa.
He further encouraged residents to support local running clubs and athletes, saying sport plays an important role in building confidence, discipline, social cohesion and stronger communities.
Maruleng Local Municipality remains committed to supporting initiatives that bring people together, promote healthy living, stimulate local economic development and grow tourism in the area.
