Eddie Maila and Pule Josiah Shayi sworn in as Members of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature (MPLs) today.
The long-anticipated reshuffle of the Limpopo Provincial Executive Council reached a decisive turning point today following the formal swearing-in of political heavyweights Pule Josiah Shayi and Eddie Maila as Members of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature (MPLs).
The ceremony was presided over by Speaker of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature, Hon. Dr Makoma Makhurupetje, filling two key vacancies within the house. Flanked by Deputy Speaker Tebogo Mamorobela and Deputy Chair of Chairs, Hon. Hasani Peter Ngobeni, the Legislature officially welcomed the two African National Congress (ANC) representatives as they assumed office in service to the people of Limpopo.
The official swearing-in follows early morning developments that signaled an executive shake-up was imminent. Confirmation first surfaced in an SABC News report and was swiftly followed by the rushed resignation of Shayi from his post as Executive Mayor of the Mopani District Municipality. Shayi’s resignation letter to the municipal speaker cleared his path for immediate deployment to the provincial administration.
The restructuring within government follows the political shifts brought on by the recent ANC Limpopo Provincial Conference. The elective gathering reordered internal power dynamics, drastically elevating the political standing of key regional figures while altering the trajectory of long-serving party stalwarts.
Among those whose political influence surged at the conference was Polokwane Executive Mayor John Mpe, who secured the position of ANC Deputy Provincial Chairperson. Joining him in the party’s executive leadership were Shayi and Maila, the newly sworn-in MPLs.
Conversely, former Deputy Provincial Secretary Basikopo Makamu experienced a drop in status, shifting to an additional member role while serving as deputy head of elections. Similarly, Florence Radzilani saw her influence ebb after stepping down from her previous post as provincial deputy chairperson to serve as an additional member of the provincial executive committee.
Changes in the ANC provincial hierarchy have historically served as a prelude to shifts within the provincial cabinet. While cabinet restructuring rumours had fluctuated for months, momentum accelerated rapidly today as Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba prepared to make her formal executive announcement.
Both Shayi and Maila were added to the ANC reserve list for the Limpopo Provincial Legislature prior to the announcement, setting the foundation for their transition from municipal leadership to the legislative chamber.
Notably absent from the shortlist was newly elected ANC Deputy Chairperson John Mpe. Mpe opted to remain in local government as Executive Mayor of Polokwane Municipality and participated in the required interview process to maintain his mayoral role.
Meanwhile, delays leading up to the reshuffle triggered significant political friction within local government ranks. In the Mopani District, the impending leadership transition opened room for intense political contestation. Dagma Mamanyoha, widely regarded as the logical candidate to succeed Shayi as Mopani District Municipality Executive Mayor, has faced aggressive challenges from rival internal factions.
With Shayi and Maila now officially taking their oaths of office in the legislature, all eyes turn to Premier Ramathuba’s office in Polokwane, where the announcement of her revised cabinet will seal the new political line up for Limpopo.
