The annual Mapungubwe festival is a melting pot of Africa’s diverse cultures.

The buildup for the Mapungubwe Arts and Culture Festival is underway, promising a variety of scintillating events in the run up to the main event.

The annual flagship event hosted by the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to build nation-building, social unity, and community engagement across all five districts of Limpopo.

The build-up programme is headed to Greater Letaba Municipality, Mopani District, from October 29 to 31 featuring local performances, film shows, craft exhibitions, a skills workshop and a cultural festival.

The Mopani leg will commence at Modjadji’s Kloof Bus Rank on October 29 with local artists, film shows, cultural dances, choral music, clap-and-tap performances and craft exhibitions.

The journey proceeds to Sekgopo Community Hall on October 30 for skills workshop for creatives and drama performances and the next day at the local sports complex for the traditional cultural festival.

Named after the historic Mapungubwe World Heritage Site, the festival honors the region’s history, traditions, and identity as the “melting pot of Africa’s cultures”.

The program features local and national musicians, traditional dance, drama, fashion, film, and comedy.

The event, culminating on 12 December at Polokwane Cricket Club, will also feature new district-level competitions for artists, promoting local talent.

Addressing the media during the festival launch at Meropa Casino and Entertainment on September 30, MEC Constance Bellah Kupa-Mabuza said the department aims to make this year’s event bigger than previous editions.

“The annual festival aims to promote Limpopo’s cultural heritage while providing established and emerging artists with a platform to showcase their talents through music, exhibitions, plays and other performances.

In previous years, aspiring artists complained that they were not considered for the festival line-up. This year, however, artists will have an opportunity to compete at district level, with the best performers invited to appear at the main festival. We promote Mapungubwe as a renowned World Heritage Site in our province because of the rich history in this area,” she said.

Kupa-Mabuza has called on South Africans from walks of life to come en masse to attend the festival and experience the diverse cultures of Limpopo.

“The 2026 festival will turn a new leaf as we plan to improve the brand of the Mapungubwe Festival to be known internationally” she said.
