The Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs has issued a stern warning to residents regarding severe weather conditions hitting parts of the province.
The alert comes directly on the heels of rain scares and thunderstorms that swept through parts of the region, causing concern during the first day of special voting for the local government elections.
According to preliminary reports from the South African Weather Service, the inclement weather brings heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail, and thunderstorms. These conditions threaten to cause localized flooding, damage properties, and disrupt power supplies. Municipal areas expected to bear the brunt of these severe weather patterns include Bela-Bela, Fetakgomo, Lepelle-Nkumpi, Modimolle, and Mogalakwena.
The timing of the weather warning has raised anxieties because it coincides with the initial phase of special voting. Electoral officials rolled out special votes to accommodate eligible citizens, including vulnerable and elderly residents who required home visits. However, the sudden downpours and stormy conditions created logistical challenges for election teams trying to reach voters at their residential addresses. Despite these hurdles, disaster management teams and emergency services have been fully activated through the Provincial Joint Operational Centre to monitor the situation and keep communities safe.
Authorities are urging citizens to take specific precautions to protect themselves during this period. Members of the public are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the scorching sun, particularly in areas experiencing extreme heat. Residents should also carry umbrellas to shield themselves against either intense heat or sudden rain showers. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution on the roads if rain persists and visibility drops.
Fortunately, relief is on the horizon for the final stretches of the electoral schedule. The weather outlook for election day indicates fine, warm to very hot conditions across the province, paving the way for a stable continuation of the democratic process.
For further updates and emergency assistance, members of the media and the public can contact the department’s communication offices or reach out to the MEC spokesperson, Mr. Amos Phago.
