ABC Motsepe league newcomers Thlothlokwe Golden Syrup celebrated their first league victory of the season by defeating the tough United Artists team 2-1 at Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday.

This win was particularly significant for the Bolobedu-based side, who are currently struggling in the relegation zone. The victory not only revitalized their hopes of avoiding relegation but also sent a clear message that they mean business under the guidance of coach Zungu Nkosi.

The experienced coach from KwaZulu-Natal implemented an effective strategy that left their opponents disorganized, even in their home ground.

“We knew they are strong defensively and don’t lose easily, which is why we pressed them high and aimed to keep the ball away from them. The system worked well, as they became frustrated, and their defense eventually cracked. After scoring a goal in the first half and another in the second half, they managed only a consolation goal in the dying minutes of the game,” Zungu explained.

In a surprising move, coach Zungu decided to position their underage goalkeeper, Katlego “Khune” Sebopetsa, as an attacking player instead of his usual role. The lanky player excelled in this new position, earning a foul next to the box, from which Syrup scored. Former Happy Boys goalkeeper Wesley Mathebula started as the team’s primary goalkeeper during the match.

Coach Zungu shared that he recognized Khune’s potential as an infield player during training sessions. “I usually give players new roles in training to observe their capabilities, and that’s how I discovered Katlego’s talent,” he stated.

For Thlothlokwe to avoid relegation, they need to win at least five of their remaining six games.
