Prudence Sekgodiso is poised to make her mark on the global athletics stage.
Following a remarkable season where she broke the South African 800m record in her indoor debut, she has been selected to represent South Africa at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, from March 21-23.
This will be Sekgodiso’s first appearance at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, and she is confident in her abilities. With seven national titles under her belt, including her first in the women’s 800m at the 2019 championships when she was just 17 years old, Sekgodiso is ready to take on the world’s best athletes.
In an interview with SABC Sport, Sekgodiso expressed her excitement and optimism ahead of the championships. “My target is to just be in the final, and anything can happen in the final. A medal is what I’m looking for as well,” she said.
Sekgodiso is focusing all her attention on the World Indoor Champs, training hard to maintain her form and fitness.
The 23-year-old has developed a strong passion for indoor events, preferring them over outdoor competitions. “There is no wind, and I love the atmosphere. The spectators are right there, and I love the track – it’s short and fun,” she explained.
Sekgodiso set a new national indoor record of 1:59.88 in France last month, breaking the previous record twice.
She is now determined to lower it even further at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in China. With her sights set on breaking another record, Sekgodiso is ready to make her mark on the global stage.
