MPHENI DEFENDERS CROWNED STREAM A CHAMPIONS AFTER DRAMATIC BOARDROOM VICTORIES

In one of the most dramatic finishes to an ABC Motsepe League season in recent memory, Mpheni Defenders have been crowned Stream A champions after winning two crucial arbitration cases that ultimately decided the title race in the boardroom rather than on the pitch.

The Louis Trichardt-based club had two unresolved disputes against second-placed Vondwe XI Bullets, and both rulings went in their favor, awarding them six points—enough to catapult them to the top of the standings.

Mpheni Defenders announced the outcome stating: “We are delighted to announce that we have won our arbitration case. The ruling of the Disciplinary Committee, which indicated that the game that took place at Makonde Stadium should be replayed, has been overturned.

The arbitrator has ruled that we should be awarded the three points, and the scoreline of 1-0 in our favor should stand, since the game was abandoned while we were leading 1-0. We have also been refunded our arbitration fee, and Vondwe XI Bullets has been ordered to pay the costs of arbitration.”

The second match, played at Thohoyandou Stadium, was also confirmed in Mpheni’s favor after the Disciplinary Committee’s previous ruling of a 2-1 victory was upheld. Vondwe XI Bullets’ appeal was dismissed, sealing their fate and confirming Mpheni Defenders as Stream A champions.

With the six-point boost, Mpheni leapfrogged their rivals and celebrated a dramatic title win, reigniting their ambitions of progressing through the football ranks.

With the stream title secured, Mpheni Defenders now set their sights on the Limpopo provincial playoffs, where they will face the champions of Stream B—either The Dolphins or Sunrise—both of whom are also entangled in ongoing boardroom battles for the top spot.

The winner of the Limpopo provincial playoffs will go on to represent the province in the ABC Motsepe League National Promotional Playoffs, where teams from across South Africa’s provinces compete for promotion to the National First Division (NFD).
