The Dolphins FC earned sweet revenge and provincial glory after edging out Mpheni Defenders 5-4 on penalties to win the Limpopo ABC Motsepe League Championship at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday.
Having lost 1-0 to Mpheni Defenders in the same stage two seasons ago, The Dolphins came into this clash with a point to prove — and they delivered under pressure.
After a goalless first half, The Dolphins struck early in the second half to take a 1-0 lead. However, Mpheni Defenders, known for their resilience, responded with an equalizer that took the game into a tense penalty shootout.
In the end, it was The Dolphins who held their nerve, converting five spot-kicks to Mpheni’s four, sealing a memorable victory and booking their place in the national ABC Motsepe League promotional playoffs.
With this win, The Dolphins will now represent Limpopo alongside champions from the other eight provinces as they battle for promotion to the National First Division.
The triumph marks a significant milestone in the club’s journey and reignites their hopes of advancing into professional ranks.
