The overwhelming atmosphere of rugby across the city of Polokwane is almost tangible ahead of the much-anticipated Mapungubwe rugby showdown.

The 2026 edition takes place on March 27 at the iconic Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on the southeastern outskirts of capital city.

The battle of the titans between the Vodacom Bulls and the Emirates Lions has all the hallmarks of a swashbuckling rugby extravaganza.

Polokwane and Limpopo rugby fans are once again in for a treat as both team sides are under the tutelage of highly tactical coaching regimes.

The event is billed for an exhilarating kick-off with thrilling curtain raiser matches celebrating local talent and fierce competition as the Limpopo Under-20 takes on the University of Limpopo Women at 13:00 and the Noordelikes faces the University of Limpopo in another exciting showdown.

At 18:00, the energy is exacerbated to reach its peak when the Vodacom Bulls Under-23 clash with the Lions Under-23 in the eagerly awaited encounter.

MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Jerry Maseko has called on residents across the province to come out in numbers to support the rugby spectacle.

He emphasised the importance of the Mapungubwe Rugby Festival, saying it brings communities together and stimulates local economic activity. “Mapungubwe Rugby is more than just a sporting event; it is a celebration of our people, our talent and our shared passion for sport. We encourage all residents to come and be part of this memorable experience,” said Maseko.

Maseko said the department is confident that the event will draw large crowds and further position Limpopo as a hub for major sporting events.

“The event forms part of the province’s ongoing commitment to promoting sport development, fostering unity, and creating platforms for local talent to shine.

Rugby enthusiasts can expect an exciting showcase of competitive spirit and community pride;” he said.
