AS the curtain comes down on what has been an exhilarating Women’s Month, football referee Anna Mogano says sometimes breaking the glass ceiling is difficult nay impossible.

As South Africa celebrates womanhood in August, the spotlight falls on women who continue to break barriers and make their mark in fields traditionally dominated by men.

Mogano burst on the football pitch as a match officials and refereeing has afforded her immeasurable authority in the male-dominated field.

The resilienlt whistlewoman from the rural community of Ga Molepo is speedily carving out her own path in the world of football officiating.

“I could have pursued football as a player but I chose officiating. It comes with passion, discipline, but most fundamentally, authority. It’s a huge task to control the flow of the game. You deal with lots of emotions of people coming from different backgrounds. But the ultimate authority comes from the match officials to quell hight tempos and attitudes,” she says.

Mogano has taken her passion for the beautiful game beyond the touchline, serving as the main referee and lineswoman in several competitive leagues.

She has featured predominantly officiating in the Sasol League, regional leagues and other Hollywoodbets-sponsored contests.

Mogano’s whirlwind journey as a match official is one of the success stories women’ sporting fables, passion and a daring courage to open doors, notwithstanding the myriad barriers.

Despite being from a rural area, she has demonstrated that opportunities can be created through hard work and commitment. Her presence on the football pitch is not only about enforcing the laws of the game—it is also about inspiring other young women to believe that they, too, can pursue careers in sport.

Over the years, Mogano has officiated at local football tournaments, bringing her experience, professionalism and passion to community competitions.

As the nation celebrates Women’s Month, Mogano stands as a reminder that women belong wherever their passion and talent take them—including on the football pitch, making the big calls.

“Sometimes one just needs Devine intervention to get things done. Sport is among those things which physical talent is just isn’t enough. You deal with lots of things when controlling the game. Refereeing needs someone with sound judgment within a short space of time. Well, it’s the nature of the beast but we have to embrace every moment,” says Mogano.
